Consultation

Most people are referred for cardiology consultation due to a heart murmur, palpitations, chest pain or fainting. Please anticipate spending close to two hours in our office at the initial visit to allow us to do a complete evaluation. A typical visit includes a review of the history, a physical examination and an electrocardiogram. Depending on what the cardiologist learns from these exams, additional testing may be required, including an echocardiogram, an exercise stress test, a holter monitor, an event recorder, and/or a chest radiograph (x-ray). Additional testing can often be completed on the same day but sometimes requires a return visit, which will be scheduled at your convenience by our staff. We also offer services in sleep medicine. A consultation appointment is an office visit with one of our sleep physicians. During the appointment, you and your doctor will discuss your symptoms, history and a treatment plan. Completing the medical evaluation forms before you arrive will allow your doctor to focus on your complaints and use your time together efficiently. They can be found under the patient resources tab of this site. During the evaluation, your doctor will perform a history and physical to assess your health. This includes routine assessments such as taking your blood pressure, listening to your breathing, and reviewing your medical history. You will be asked to discuss your sleep complaints as well as any other related conditions. It is always wise to prepare a list of questions and key issues you would like to discuss before your appointment to ensure all of your questions are answered. Based on your history and symptoms, your doctor will do further testing such as a sleep study to confirm your diagnosis or else he or she will work with you to develop a treatment plan.

Nuclear Medicine

Introducing Revolutionary State of the Art Cardiac Imaging to the Athens area.

AHC is the only ICANL accredited outpatient facility in the state of Georgia. No referral needed. Call us anytime and we will set up an appointment.

A cardiac Positron Emission Tomography (PET) exam is a state of the art nuclear stress test that is used to evaluate the blood flow of the heart. Patients who receive this exam may have symptoms and/or risk factors for heart disease. Some patients may also have known heart disease.

How Does it Work?

PET uses high energy positrons (instead of photons) to image the blood flow of the heart. Rubidium82 (Rb82) is injected into the patient at rest and at peak pharmacological stress. The patient will have an IV started in one of their veins, and prepped with EKG leads. They will then lie on a camera with their arms above their head, and imaged for 5-10 minutes post Rb82 injection. Next we will administer a pharmacological stress (Regadenoson) through their IV, followed by another injection of Rb82 and imaged for 5-10 minutes. Once this is finished, the PET exam is complete. Perfusion of the heart at rest and at stress will be compared and reported on.

PET is the most advanced Nuclear Medicine Testing to date, utilizing the latest technology available to produce a 95% Accuracy rate!

Cardiac PET Advantages

• Cardiac PET generates around 5.4 million counts compared to 2.2 million counts in SPECT imaging. This leads to better attenuation correction, and reduced the uncertainty that can be associated with low energy SPECT.
• Superior spatial resolution.
• Better image contrast.
• Superior temporal resolution
• Shorter half life with radiopharmaceutical ( leads to less radiation exposure to the patient)
• Shorter Protocol - SPECT Nuclear Stress Test takes about 3-5 hours, compared to a Cardiac PET Nuclear Stress Test which takes about 1 hour start to finish. This leads to less patient motion, and improved patient satisfaction.

Common Indications for a Cardiac PET Nuclear Stress Test

Indications are the same as a SPECT Nuclear Stress Test Suspected CAD - Chest Pain, Shortness of Breath, or Abnormal EKGKnown CAD - New or worsening Chest Pain, Shortness of breath, or Cardiac Clearance in high risk patients

When to Order a Cardiac PET?

A Cardiac PET scan can be ordered in place of a general SPECT Nuclear Stress Test if one or more of the following are present: 1) Patient is unable to walk on the treadmill 2) Obese Patients3) Large Breasts or Breast Implants

Personalized Medicine

Why We Moved to a More Personal Approach to Medicine

Personalized medicine is the newest technology offered at Athens Heart Center. Your genes can tell a lot about your susceptibility for disease. One of our newest endeavors at Athens Heart Center is personalized medicine. Personalized medicine is personal. Athens Heart Center just a generalized diagnosis that has been given to 100 patients that day. Personalized medicine is the ability to determine an individual's unique molecular characteristics and to use those genetic distinctions to diagnose more finely an individual's disease, select treatments that increase the chances of a successful outcome and reduce possible adverse reactions. Personalized medicine also is the ability to predict an individual's susceptibility to diseases and thus to try to shape steps that may help avoid or reduce the extent to which an individual will experience a disease.

Through genetics and thorough review of your medical history we determine specific causes for your medical conditions. Many times there are multiple issues that afflict a patient, which are connected. As a practice, we can no longer simply worry about the heart because it is a part of a larger body. Part of a new field called personalized medicine, pharmacogenomics offers the promise of predicting whether a medication is likely to help or hurt you before you ever take it. Athens Heart Center is one of the frontrunners in this new area of medicine. Patients are personal to us. That is why we believe in personalized medicine.

We Are Making Your Diagnosis Truly Yours.

Vein Therapy

Vein are the blood vessels that return blood to the heart from the body. To overcome the force of gravity, inside the veins are one-way valves which open to allow blood flow to the heart, and close to prevent "reflux" of blood back to the body. When these valves fail to function, or if the vein is damaged so the valves do not completely close, blood can begin to build up in the vein and cause a variety of vein complications, such as varicose veins and spider veins. Varicose veins are the large, "rope-like" veins that are often a quarter-inch in diameter. They can occur when veins do not properly return blood from the lower leg to the heart. When the valves inside the legs fail to work properly, blood leaks through and flows down the leg in the wrong direction, away from the heart. The blood overfills and distends the superficial veins under the skin, resulting in the bulging seen in varicose veins. When varicose veins become severe, as in the photo shown here, the condition is referred to as chronic venous insufficiency. Symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency include aching pain, easy leg fatique and leg heaviness, all of which worsen as the day progresses. Varicose veins generally continue to grow in size over time and can result in substantial pain and complications if not treated. Chronic venous insufficiency can cause ulcerations which can be very difficult to treat. Spider veins Spider veins are the small, thread-like colored veins that are most often seen on the surface of the skin. While many people seek treatment for spider veins for cosmetic reasons, spider veins also can result in substancial discomfort requiring therapy.
